My Review of Food Truck Baby:
Food Truck Baby is my first foray into the world of LGBTQ+ novels, and I have mixed feelings. The characters are fantastic, and I loved getting to know all of them. Their individual stories are interesting, and the way they come together as a group is well done.
This audiobook is 110 chapters. I was overwhelmed early on from the sheer number of sections, though I think the longest one is about 5 minutes long. I thought that was strange, but I powered on. Once the book got going, I found that I hated the narrator’s voices for each character. I would have preferred for her to use her normal voice throughout. Her voice for Tai, for example, is mannish and that put me off right away because it is stereotypical for one of the women in a lesbian relationship to be masculine and while this is sometimes true, it is not the norm.
I enjoyed the book once I got past the narration, which leaves much to be desired. I am not an audiobook fan as my mind tends to wander, and this book was no exception. I found that once I started doing something with my hands, I was able to enjoy the book a lot more. I was even able to get used to the narration after a bit.
The prose is good, but the characters all made a point not to step on toes, and it was repeated many times throughout the book. The last half of the audiobook was adventurous and full of mystery. As a newcomer to the genre, I found myself pleased with the book that I had chosen.
Ultimately, the book made me smile big smiles.
Taking it all into consideration, I award Food Truck Baby 3.5 stars out of 5. I will be listening to many more of Nicole’s books. Watch for the reviews!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
