Christmas is a time for miracles, but miracles have always bothered Hamilton Dinger.
This Christmas Eve, he has only two reasons to be cheerful: Rachel’s Café is open late, and he has a special present for Gwen Kessler. So even if he has to sit through a session of Grandpa Odd’s ramblings, he knows he’ll have some holiday mocha and a chance at finally telling Gwen how he feels about her. His fledgling hope is lost the moment when a new demon monster begins attacking the Star of Hope. Now, not only does Hamilton have to transform into his city superhero self to fight it, he has to deal with Starry Knight, too. Can Hamilton find a new reason for hope this holiday, or is it too much to ask for one more Christmas miracle?
Find out in this short story set between the Book 1 and Book 2 of the Starlight Chronicles from C. S. Johnson, now with illustrations by comics artist Eko Bambang.
My Review of Awakening: A Christmas Episode
I love graphic novels! Unfortunately, I do not get to read them as often as I like, so when this book showed up on my radar, I snatched it up. I am happy that I did.
This is my first introduction to the Starlight Chronicles series, I am ready for more! Author C.S. Johnson has given us a fantastic world with some interesting characters. However, I do hate Hamilton, he is downright obnoxious in his love for himself.
The illustrations are brilliant and capture the characters well. Grandpa Odd looks like an old wise man that I would love to get to know better. His eyes alone could tell this story.
My only negative reaction to this graphic novel is that the writing was exceedingly small in places and I had a challenging time reading those selections, even with my glasses on. However, to be fair, I was reading on my computer and I believe that if I had had the hard copy in my hand, I would have not found this to be so challenging.
I rate this graphic novel 4 stars. I removed one star because there are a few misspellings throughout the book, and I was not sure if it was the author’s style or mistakes. Either way, it is a great, quick read and an excellent addition to the series.
